According to Cooper et al. (2007), punishment refers to the way in which a specific response is followed by a change in stimulus so that a specific behavior is prevented to recur in high frequencies. Therefore, the prevention of the behavior to recur is important for understanding the technical term (Cooper et al. 2007). However, in context of the colloquial usage of the word punishment, the consequences of doing something unethical/illegal refers to punishment of an individual. There is no importance/consideration given to bringing about a change in the accused individual for not recurring the specific unethical/illegal behavior in the future.
